Train Like an Astronaut

Saturday March 7th, 2020 / 8.30am - 3.00pm University of Hawaii, Campus Center - 3rd Floor.

Workshop for Middle School Students and Teachers
How healthy and fit are you for life on Earth and in Space?
The science of fitness and nutrition for aspiring astronauts.

This workshop is focused on the physical training that Astronauts undergo before space missions. Students will learn about what kind of activities astronauts perform while on the International Space Station, about space nutrition and space environment.
What happens to your body when you work out? Let’s find out how your heart rate changes and why! Teachers and students will try first-hand training activities on upper and lower body strength; the last activity of the day will be about nutrition and the rules for balanced eating habits.

Quarknet MasterClass

Quarknet Masterclass

Saturday March 14th, 2020 / 10.30 am - 5.30 pm
Punahou School, Cornuelle Room.

The Masterclass will focus on particle physic with hand-on activities and talks.
The day will start off with the Rutherford Activity to learn how nucleus behave, will play with the Quark Puzzle pieces and learn how quarks can combine, and will use images from ATLAS to find different particles.
Lunch will be provided and students are encouraged to ask questions and mingle with the physicists!
During the afternoon there will be talks from professors of UH Manoa and data analysis; the masterclass will conclude with a Videoconference with Fermilab and students around the world to discuss about the results they gathered.

Cosmic Ray Workshop

Saturday September 28th, 2019 / 9.00 am - 3.30 pm
Punahou School, Mamiya Science Center.

This workshop will start with the talk on the particle detector and its applications. After that, students will tackle the activities about the particle detector and Solar Energetic Particles (or SEP), and the tour of a Muon Detector. Lunch will be provided and students are encouraged to mingle and ask questions to the physicists!
After lunch will be time for the talk on AMS data and Solar Energetic Particles, followed by the Cosmic Ray Analysis.
We will finish the workshop with a Post Test and Evaluation of the Workshop.
